A liquidproof paperboard carton having a pourspout (1) extending through an aperture (5) in the paperboard. The spout includes inner and outer flanges (4', 6) secured to the inner and outer surfaces (2a, 2b) of the carton. The double flange construc- tion isolates the edge of the aperture form exposure to liquid. The flanges are secured to the carton using heat and pressure sup- plied, for example, by an ultrasonically vibrating horn (10) and an anvil (20). The spout also includes a threaded cap (Ib) and a tamper-evident membrane (1C).
