This invention relates to compositions and processes for the fabrication of piezoelectric composites having improved figures of merit for both sensor and non-sensor applications. These composites comprise piezoelectric particles embedded in a polymer matrix. The improvements of this invention result from discoveries of the effects of polymer bulk compliance, polymer anisotropy, polymer melt index, and polymer/ceramic wettability on performance. The loss corrected figure of merit (ghdh/tan.delta.) obtained for the 0-3 composites is as high as 10.5 x 10-10 m2/N, which is about four times higher than previously published for 0-3 composites of the prior art. Methods are described for the introduction of anisotropy into ceramic particle/polymer composites, so that cancellation effects that degrade the piezoelectric properties of composites can be reduced.

L'invention concerne des compositions et des procédés de fabrication de composites piézo-électriques présentant des facteurs de qualité améliorés en matière d'applications de détection et de non détection. Ces composites comprennent des particules piézo-électriques enchâssées dans une matrice polymère. Les améliorations de l'invention résultent des découvertes relatives aux effets, en termes de performances, de la complaisance de compressibilité, de l'anisotropie, de l'indice de fusion des polymères et de la mouillabilité des polymères/céramiques. Le facteur de qualité corrigé en moins (g¿h?d¿h?/tan.delta.) obtenu pour les composites 0-3 s'élève à 10,5 x 10?-10¿ m?2¿/N, soit environ quatre fois plus que les composites 0-3 de l'état de la technique. L'invention concerne également des procédés d'introduction d'anisotropie dans des composites de particules céramiques/polymères, lesquels permettent de réduire les effets d'annulation qui nuisent aux propriétés piézo-électriques des composites.
