The manufacture of L-(-)-carnitine from a starting compound containing an asymmetrical carbon atom having a configuration opposite to that of L-(-)-carnitine is set out. The starting compound is D-(+)-carnitinamide which is converted into an ester followed by conversion of the ester to an acyl derivative followed by acid hydrolysis of the COOR group to a carboxylic group to obtain acyl D-(+)-carnitine followed by lactonizing the acyl D-(+)-carnitine to a lactone of L-(-)-carnitine followed by a conversion of the lactone to L-(-)-carnitine.
