An ultrasonic railhead investigating apparatus (18) comprising a side looking transducer (20) with a lens (64) to focus the beam in a manner whereby rail defects in the sides of rail heads (22) are more readily detected. In one form of the invention a side looking ultrasonic rail investigating transducer is provided with a curved emitting surface (64) and located so as to place the focused acoustic beam between a side of the rail (52) and the rail center. The curved emitting surface can be part of a cylindrical suface aligned parallel with the longitudinal axis of the rail or a spherically shaped emitting surface to provide a conically shaped beam for investigating the side of a rail.
L'invention porte sur un appareil (18) à ultrasons servant à vérifier l'état de têtes de rails et comportant un transducteur (20) d'inspection à vision latérale muni d'une lentille focalisant le faisceau de manière à améliorer la détection des défauts latéraux de la tête de rail (22). Dans l'une de ses variantes, ledit transducteur (20) comporte une surface d'émission (64) incurvée et positionnée de manière à ce que le faisceau d'ultrasons focalisé soit dirigé entre le côté et le centre du rail (52). La surface d'émission (64) incurvée peut consister en un secteur de surface cylindrique parallèle à l'axe longitudinal du rail ou en un secteur de surface d'émission sphérique de manière à produire un faisceau conique servant à l'inspection du côté du rail.
