A ratchetable open-ended wrench (1) having a slidable retractable jaw member (11) in a slot (21) in one of its jaws (18) and having a cover plate (23), preferably two cover plates, welded to the jaw in a manner such that the cover plate forms a load~ bearing structural member within the jaw.
