A padded garment such as shoulder pads for shielding the upper torso and shoulder regions of a wearer has separate left-side and right-side padded front panels that have confronting edges that are spaced apart in the sternum region. A rigid sternum panel is positioned to cover the gap between and to overlie adjacent marginal areas of the padded panels, the sternum panel being secured to the latter by elasticized straps which are resiliently stretchable to allow movement of the sternum panel with respect to the padded panels. The straps are preferably arranged in an X-configuration and the sternum panel also includes an enlarged padded layer positioned to overlie the interior marginal edges of the left-side and right-side padded panels.
