Improved silicon carbide composites made by an infiltration process feature a metal phase in addition to any residual silicon phase. Not only are properties such as mechanical toughness improved, but the infiltrant can be so engineered as to have much diminished amounts of expansion upon solidification, thereby enhancing net-shape-making capabilities. Further, multi-component infiltrant materials may have a lower liquidus temperature than pure silicon, thereby providing the practitioner with greater control over the infiltration process. In particular, the infiltration may be conducted at the lower temperatures, where low-cost but effective bedding or barrier materials can terminate the infiltration process once the infiltrant has migrated through the permeable mass up to the boundary between the mass and the bedding material.

Cette invention se rapporte à des composites de carbure de silicium améliorés, que l'on produit par un processus d'infiltration et qui possèdent une phase métallique en plus d'une phase de silicium résiduelle. On améliore ainsi non seulement les propriétés telles que la ténacité mécanique, mais, grâce à la conception de la matière infiltrante, on diminue en outre considérablement les quantités d'expansion de cette matière, lors de la solidification, améliorant ainsi les capacités du composite à produire des formes nettes. Des matières infiltrantes à composants multiples peuvent également avoir une température dite "liquidus" inférieure à celle du silicium pur, offrant ainsi à l'opérateur un plus grand contrôle du processus d'infiltration. L'infiltration peut plus particulièrement être effectuée à des températures inférieures, au niveau desquelles des matériaux d'assise ou de barrière moins coûteux mais efficaces peuvent terminer le processus d'infiltration, une fois que la matière infiltrante a migré à travers la masse perméable, jusqu'à la frontière entre la masse et le matériau d'assise.
