An improved starter pull cord for an internal combustion engine having significantly increased resistance to wear and strength comprised of rope made from synthetic fibers selected from the group consisting of para-aramid, high modulus polyethylene, and poly-p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole (PBO) and a handle connected to one end of said rope. The use of a rope comprised of synthetic fibers selected from the group consisting of para-aramid, high modulus polyethylene, and poly-p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole (PBO) in a starter pull cord for an internal combustion engine. The rope may be a single braided rope woven from the synthetic fibers. A urethane coating may be provided on the surface of the rope for improved abrasion resistance.
