A desuperheater (10) is disclosed which employs an acceler- ation orifice (34) within a steam conduit (18) to increase the veloc- ity of steam flowing therethrough, creating a region of low pressure steam. A nozzle (50) having an enclosed elliptical discharge ori- fice (60) sprays small droplets of cooling water in a semi-elliptical hollow cone pattern directly into the region of low pressure steam flow. Evaporation of the cooling water into the steam is optimized allowing effective control of the steam temperature. Nozzle foul- ing and plugging is reduced because the droplet size created by the nozzle is small in comparison to the nozzle orifice.
