The novel design of a surface ionization detector, for detecting trace amounts of organic molecules, for hand portable use, including a bifilar filament, rigidly supported at both ends and mounted on the same rigid base with a screen cathode, thus ensuring mechanical stability and reproducibility of measurement. The use of very small diameter wire for the filament provides a large surface/mass ratio, has lower power consumption and yet provides adequate sensitivity. An alternative approach for even lower power consumption is the use of a filament composed of a thin metal film deposited on a non-conducting substrate, such as quartz. The provision of multiple filaments, of different metals used simultaneously and sequentially, allows for improved detection and identification of species, or for longer detector lifetime.
