A system for rendering terrain from a viewpoint, the viewpoint having an area of regard, comprises a database, for storing vertices and texture maps. The vertices represent points on a surface of an object to be rendered and the texture maps represent visual properties of the surface of an object to be rendered. A first database retrieval module retrieves vertices from the database and stores the retrieved vertices in a tile assembly buffer. A first tile assembly buffer is communicatively coupled to the first database retrieval module and stores a plurality of vertices included within the area of regard. At least one sector buffer stores vertices extracted from the first tile assembly buffer, and assembles the extracted vertices into geometric primitives for rendering. A graphics pipeline renders the geometric primitives.
