The present invention provides an improved thin layer nuclear density gauge comprising a gauge housing having a vertical cavity therethrough and a base, a first radiation detector located at a first position within said housing and adjacent to said base of said housing, a second radiation detector located at a second position within said housing and adjacent to said base of said housing, a vertically moveable source rod extending into said cavity of said gauge housing, a radiation source operatively positioned within a distal end of said source rod, at least one bearing operatively positioned to guide said source rod within said cavity, and means for vertically extending and retracting said source rod to a plurality of predetermined source rod positions so as to change the spatial relationship between said radiation source and said first and second radiation detectors. The source rod has a maximum radial movement of less than about 0.003 inch at each predetermined position. The present invention also provides a gauge with an improved radiation shield assembly comprising a sliding block operatively positioned to move laterally between said first position and said second position, a spring engaging said sliding block and biasing said sliding block into said first position, and a fixed block, said fixed block including a track engaging said sliding block and guiding movement of said sliding block. L'invention concerne une jauge de densité nucléaire à fines couches, qui comprend un logement de jauge doté d'une cavité verticale traversante et d'une base, un premier détecteur de radiation situé dans une première position à l'intérieur dudit logement et adjacent à sa base, un second détecteur de radiation situé dans une seconde position à l'intérieur dudit logement et adjacent à sa base, un crayon de source verticalement mobile s'étendant dans la cavité du logement, une source de radiation fonctionnellement placée à une extrémité distale du crayon de source, au moins un support fonctionnellement placé de façon à guider le crayon de source dans la cavité, et un dispositif permettant d'allonger et de raccourcir le crayon de source en diverses positions prédéterminées de manière à modifier la relation spatiale entre ladite source de radiation et lesdits premier et second détecteurs de radiation. Le crayon de source imprime un mouvement radial maximal inférieur à 0,003 pouce dans chaque position prédéterminée. L'invention concerne également une jauge dotée d'un ensemble écran anti-radiation amélioré comportant un bloc coulissant fonctionnellement placé de façon à se déplacer latéralement entre ladite première et ladite seconde position, un ressort sollicitant ledit bloc coulissant et le poussant dans la première position, ainsi qu'un bloc fixe doté d'une glissière permettant d'enclencher le bloc coulissant et de guider le mouvement de ce dernier.
