A catheter system (10) includes a catheter sheath (12) and a flexible working shaft (14) within a working lumen (16) of the sheath (12). The sheath (12) includes a monorail-type guide wire lumen (32) at its distal end, and a stiffening member (26) is provided adjacent a side port (34) of the monorail guide wire lumen (32) to inhibit prolapse of the catheter as it is introduced past a bend or curve over a guide wire. In a first embodiment, the stiffening member (26) may be secured directly within a working lumen (16) of the catheter body. In a second embodiment, the stiffening member (62) may be attached to a distal end of the working shaft (64), typically an imaging core.
