An improved a trailer brake system is disclosed. The improved system is for use with a standard air brake of the type having a first spring operatively coupled to the trailer brake, the first spring engaging the trailer brake when the spring is in a relaxed position, a first pneumatic chamber having a first movable diaphragm, the movable diaphragm causing the first spring to compress and disengage the trailer brake when the first chamber is compressed with air supplied by a first air line, a second pneumatic chamber having a second movable diaphragm, the second movable diaphragm being operatively coupled to the trailer brake such that when the second pneumatic chamber is compressed with air supplied by a second air line, the second diaphragm moves causing the trailer brake to engage. The system includes an air supply cylinder supplying a third air supply line and an electrically operated compression valve mounted adjacent the air brake. The compression valve is operatively coupled to both the second pneumatic chamber and the third pneumatic line. The electrically operated compression valve having an open state wherein the valve compresses the second pneumatic chamber with air from the third air supply line and an closed state wherein the valve closes off the third air supply line from the second pneumatic chamber. Finally, the system also includes a control circuit operatively coupled to the electrically operated compression valve and to the brake control member, the control circuit configured to energize the electrically controlled compression valve into its open state when the brake control member is engaged.
