An improved method of settling solid material from aqueous suspensions generated during the separation of oil from bituminous sand is provided based around the use of a first anionic polymer having a molecular weight of less than 5,000,000 and a charge of between 40% and 100%, and a second anionic polymer having a molecular weight of at least 5,000,000 and a charge of between 1 % and 50%. In a preferred formal the two polymers are blended together before addition to the aqueous suspension.
