A CNC lathe (1) has a control device (4) for enabling manual operation of carriages (5, 6) which are movable in mutually orthogonal directions. During manual operation, the control device (4) and the longitudinally moving carriage (5) are moved in tandem. However, for safety reasons, the control device (4) may be disengaged from the carriage (5) such that rapid movement of the carriages under the control of a CNC unit (22) is possible. The control device (4) has rollers (24) disposed in guideways (8) carried by a fixed support (7) screwed to the lathe bed (35). The fixed support (7) may similarly carry guideways (27) for slideably supporting movable covers (3). A lever (11 ) selectively engages or disengages the control device (4) and the carriage (5). Upon engagement of the control device (4) and the carriage (5), an inductive proximity switch (17) is actuated to prevent rapid traverse of the carriages. (See fig III)

Pendant le fonctionnement manuel, le dispositif de commande (4) et le chariot se déplaçant longitudinalement (5) bougent en tandem. Cependant, pour des raisons de sécurité, le dispositif de commande (4) peut être désengagé du chariot longitudinal (5) pour permettre le déplacement rapide des chariots à la demande d'une unité de commande numérique par ordinateur (22). Le dispositif de commande (4) comporte des rouleaux placés dans des guides (8) que porte un support fixe (7) vissé à la glissière de tour (35). Le support fixe (7) peut de la même manière porter des guides (27) afin de soutenir des couvercles mobiles (3) de manière qu'ils puissent coulisser. Un levier (11) permet d'engager le dispositif de commande (4) et le chariot (5) ou, au choix, de les désengager. Une fois le dispositif de commande (4) et le chariot (5) engagés, un détecteur de proximité inductif (17) est actionné afin d'empêcher que les chariots ne se déplacent rapidement. (Voir fig. III).
