A monitoring device is described suitable for use by fire-fighters. The unit combines the functions of a personal distress alarm and a gas pressure detector. The device has a pressure sensor and a movement sensor. An alarm means emits a signal of a first type when the pressure is reduced to a, or one of several, predetermined values, and a signal of a second type when no movement of the user is detected for a predetermined period of time.
