A highway pavement has a multi-layer structure interposed between the subbase and the subgrade. The multi- layer structure is also suitable for use in railway pavements. The multi-layer structure comprises upper and lower flexible sheet materials and an intermediate load- spreading layer formed of a multiplicity of load-spreading elements held together in the desired preset relationship so that gaps are provided between adjacent elements for passage of water. The upper flexible sheet material is water permeable. The lower flexible sheet material is either (a) substantially water impermeable but provided with perforations or slits therethrough at locations which open into the gaps between the load-spreading elements or (b) water vapour permeable but substantially impermeable to liquid water, or (c) substantially impermeable to liquid water and water vapour. In some embodiments the upper sheet material may be omitted.
Un revêtement routier comporte une structure multi-couches (20) intercalée entre la base de fondation (24) et le fond de forme (22), structure également utilisable pour des voies de chemin de fer. Elle comprend des matériaux en feuilles souples supérieure et inférieure (14, 10) et une couche intermédiaire de réparition de charge, constituée de multiples éléments (12) de répartition de charge maintenus ensemble en une relation présélectionnée de façon à ménager des interstices entre des éléments adjacents (12) pour laisser passer l'eau. Le matériau en feuille souple supérieure (14) est perméable à l'eau. Le matériau en feuille souple inférieure (10) est soit: (a) imperméable à l'eau en pratique mais doté de perforations (16) ou de fentes le traversant en des points débouchant sur les interstices placés entre les éléments (12) de répartition de charge, soit (b) perméable à la vapeur d'eau mais en pratique imperméable à l'eau, soit (c) en pratique imperméable à l'eau et à la vapeur d'eau. Dans certaines variantes, on peut se dispenser du matériau en feuille souple supérieure (14).
