Disclosed is a nucleotide sequence encoding an effective portion of a class A starch branching enzyme (SBE) obtainable from potato plants, or a functional equivalent thereof, together with, inter alia, a corresponding polypeptide, a method of altering the characteristics of a plant, a plant having altered characteristics; and starch, particularly starch obtained from a potato plant, having novel properties.

L'invention concerne une séquence de nucléotides codant une partie effective d'une enzyme de ramification d'amidon (SBE), de classe A qu'on peut obtenir à partir de plants de pommes de terre, ou d'un de leurs équivalents fonctionnels. De plus l'invention concerne, entre autres, un polypeptide correspondant, un procédé de modification des caractéristiques d'une plante, une plante possédant des caractéristiques modifiées, ainsi que de l'amidon, obtenu en particulier à partir d'un plant de pommes de terre, possédant de nouvelles propriétés.
