There is described a method of providing a positioning service for plural terminals (4) operating in a communication network which may, for example be a GSM telephone network. The terminals have receivers (42) for receiving signals from transmission sources (1A-1C). In the method measurements of the signals received from one or more of the transmission sources by the receivers are made and the measurements transferred to one or more data nodes (3). At the data node(s) (3) one or more records of one or more of the measurements are created and at least some of the records are transferred to one or more computing nodes (5). At the computing node(s) (5) a table (6) of the records transferred to the computing node is maintained and a computation is carried out, using at least part of the table (6), from which the positions or states of motion or relative positions or relative states of motion of said plural terminals and the transmission time offsets of the transmission sources are extractable.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant d'assurer un service de localisation à plusieurs terminaux opérant dans un réseau de communication, par exemple un réseau téléphonique GSM. Les terminaux sont dotés de récepteurs (42) qui reçoivent des signaux provenant d'au moins une source émettrice (1A-1C). Le procédé consiste à mesurer les signaux reçus de ces sources émettrices par les récepteurs et les mesures réalisées sont transférées vers au moins un noeud (3) de données. Au niveau des noeuds (3) de données, au moins un enregistrement d'au moins une mesure est créé et au moins un certain nombre d'enregistrements sont transférés vers au moins un noeud de calcul (5). Au niveau des noeuds de calcul (5), on conserve un tableau (6) des enregistrements transférés au de calcul. On effectue alors le calcul sur la base d'au moins une partie du tableau (6), qui permet d'extraire les positions ou les états de mouvement, ou les positions ou états relatifs du mouvement desdits terminaux ainsi que les décalages de temps de transmission des sources de transmission.
