A method of treatment of a rolling element bearing component by hard particle abrasion to improve the surface topography of the component. The hard particle abrasion includes the steps of immersing the bearing component in a receptacle containing hard particles, preferably alumina, and agitating the component and/or hard particles to produce relative movement. Preferably the method is performed for between 10 minutes and 1 hour. The relative movement may be produced by rotating the component in one direction while the receptacle is rotated in the opposite direction. The surface finish of the component is preferably improved from around 0.13 µm to around 0.07 µm. Compressive stress in the surface of the component may also be improved, typically by between 200 MPa and 500 MPa. Rolling contact fatigue life of the component is also improved.

L'invention concerne un procédé de traitement d'un composant de paliers à éléments roulants par abrasion à particules dures afin d'améliorer la topographie superficielle du composant. L'abrasion à particules dures consiste à prendre le composant de roulement et à l'immerger dans un récipient contenant des particules dures, de préférence de l'alumine, puis à agiter le composant et/ou les particules dures afin de produire un mouvement relatif. Ce traitement dure, de préférence, de 10 minutes à 1 heure. Pour obtenir ce mouvement relatif on fait tourner le composant dans un premier sens et le récipient en sens inverse. Ce procédé permet l'amélioration de la tolérance du fini superficiel passant d'environ 0.13 µm à environ 0.07 µm. La résistance à la contrainte en compression de la surface du composant peut être également améliorée, et passer, en principe, de 200 MPa à 500 MPa. La résistance à la fatigue du contact de roulement du composant est également être améliorée.
