A housing defines a heating chamber through which water flows. The water within the chamber is heated by the combustion of gaseous hydrogen in gaseous oxygen, stoichiometrically injected together into the chamber and then ignited by a source of heat, to produce water vapour which then mixes with the water. The ratio of Hydrogen to Oxygen injected into the chamber can be controlled either manually or automatically on the basis of the appearance of bubbles downstream of the combustion location.
