Exhaust gas catalysts are poisoned by sulphur species in the fuel, but if mounted under-floor do not reach a temperature at which sulphur may be removed. Periodic oxidation of CO and/or hydrocarbons on the catalyst by the addition of supplementary air can raise the temperature of the catalyst to at least 550 °C, preferably higher, and thus maintain desired catalytic activity.
