A method of determining whether a septic tank (1) containing a liquid and sludge or scum mixture needs to be emptied, comprising locating a sensor (28) in the mixture wherein the sensor is adapted to measure a parameter which can be used to determining the depth of sludge (27) or scum (21) in the septic tank and generating a warning signal when a signal from the sensor is indicative of a depth of sludge or scum exceeding a predetermined limit.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de déterminer si une fosse septique (1) contenant un mélange de liquide et de boue ou d'écume doit être vidangée. Ce procédé consiste à placer un capteur (28) dans le mélange, ce capteur étant conçu pour mesurer un paramètre permettant de déterminer la profondeur de la boue (27) ou de l'écume (21) dans la fosse septique, et à produire un signal d'avertissement lorsqu'un signal reçu en provenance du capteur indique une profondeur de boue ou d'écume dépassant une limite prédéterminée.
