An in-die tapping tool (1) having particular applica- tion to a progressive die method for threading holes (108) in a sheet metal workpiece (106). The tapping tool (1) in- cludes a transmission system comprising a threaded shaft assembly (26) and a planetary roller nut (42). The roller nut (42) is adapted to move axially along the shaft assem- bly (26) in response to an impact force applied to the tap- ping tool (1) during the downstroke of the press. The movement of the roller nut (42) causes the shaft assembly (26) to rotate which rotation is imparted to a threaded lead screw (70) to cause the lead screw (70) to simultaneously rotate and ride axially along a threaded wall (7) of a hol- low cylindrical body (6). The rotational and axial move- ments of the lead screw (70) through the cylindrical body (6) are transferred to the tap (56) to correspondingly in- duce a rotation and advancement of the tap (56) towards the workpiece (106) having the holes (108) to be threaded.
