An apparatus (10) for realistically reproducing sound, particularly for sound based on a stereophonic signal having dialog and effects and associated with an accompanying video image. The apparatus includes a front speaker (20) located in proximity to the video image for providing acoustic output based upon a summation signal of the component left and right (L+R) channels of the audio signal. A rear speaker (26) located to the rear of the viewing area provides acoustic output based upon a difference signal, (L-R) or (R-L), between the left and right channels. Left and right speakers (22 and 24) are located to the respective left and right sides of the viewing area. The left and right channels speakers (22 and 24) reproduce in one embodiment the respective left and right channels of the audio signal and in a second embodiment reproduce a difference signal, (L-BR) or (R-BL), where B is a gain which may vary or may be a value fixed between zero and unity. Output to the left and right speakers (22 and 24) is band limited to substantially filter out frequency components below a predetermined threshold. A bass speaker (18) may also be provided to output the low frequency components of a (L+R) summation signal. The (L+R) summation signal input to the front speaker assists in localizing dialog to the video image. The (L-BR) or (R-BL) difference signal substantially removes dialog sound so that the side and rear speaker output primarily comprises sonic ambience and surround sound effects. Band limiting the left and right speakers further assists in localizing dialog to the video image. Alternatively, in yet another embodiment, a monophonic signal may be applied to at least one embodiment of the system to enable production of a spatially enhanced surround sound effect.
La présente invention concerne un équipement (10) qui permet de reproduire d'une façon réaliste le son, en particulier quand il a pour base un signal stéréophonique comportant un dialogue et des effets acoustiques, et associé à une image vidéo. Cet équipement comprend un haut-parleur avant (20) placé à proximité de l'image vidéo pour donner un signal acoustique ayant pour base un signal de sommation des canaux constitutifs gauche et droit (G + D) du signal audio. Un haut-parleur arrière (26), situé à l'arrière de la zone de visionnage, fournit un signal acoustique ayant pour base un signal différentiel, (G-D) ou (D-G), entre les canaux gauche et droit. Les haut-parleurs gauche et droit (22 et 24) sont placés respectivement du côté gauche et du côté droit de la zone de visionnage. Dans l'un des modes de réalisation, les haut-parleurs des canaux gauche et droit (22 et 24) reproduisent les canaux gauche et droit respectifs du signal audio et, dans un deuxième mode de réalisation, ils reproduisent un signal différentiel, (G-BD) ou (D-BG), B étant un gain qui peut varier ou avoir une valeur fixe comprise entre zéro et un. Les signaux de sortie fournis aux haut-parleurs gauche et droit (22 et 24) sont à largeur de bande limitée pour éliminer sensiblement, par filtrage, les fréquences inférieures à un seuil déterminé. Il peut y avoir aussi un haut-parleur de basses (18) pour les basses fréquences d'un signal de sommation (G+D). Le signal de sommation (G+D) fourni au haut-parleur avant aide à localiser le dialogue par rapport à l'image vidéo. Le signal différentiel (G-BD) ou (D-BG) élimine sensiblement le son du dialogue, de telle sorte que le signal de sortie des haut-parleurs latéraux et arrière comprend surtout l'ambiance sonore et les effets acoustiques d'environnement. Le fait de limiter les signaux des haut-parleurs gauche et droit par filtrage passe-bande aide encore à localiser le dialogue par rapport à l'image vidéo. En variante, dans un autre mode de réalisation, on peut appliquer un signal monaural à au moins un mode de réalisation du système pour permettre la production d'un effet acoustique d'environnement qui soit renforcé dans l'espace.
