An electrochemical process for the production of an in situ bleaching agent, sodium perborate has been developed. The bleaching agent is produced from an electrolyte containing borax, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and magnesium silicate using a platinum anode and stainless steel cathodes. If 1 % pulp consistency based on spruce / balsam fir softwood is added to the electrolytic solution and the electrolysis is carried out at 10 to 40°C with an anode current density of 0.6 to 1.8 kA/ m2, the bleaching agent, sodium perborate that is generated in situ in the electrolysis cell simultaneously bleached the pulp.
