ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Bitumen in oil sands is recovered from an in-situ or subterranean deposit thereof by forming a cavity in the deposit, sloughing or crumbling the oil sands from the cavity wall, formation of an oil-in-water emulsion from the bitumen in the sloughed material and removal of the emulsion from the cavity. The emulsification is effected using de- aerated sodium hydroxide solution and the bitumen is recovered from the oil-in-water emulsion by inversion of the emulsion to a water-in-oil emulsion using slaked lime and dewatering of the water-in-oil emulsion. The continuous sloughing of the oil sands from the cavity wall and formation of the emulsion from the sloughed material causes the cavity to move through the deposit.
