IN SITU LEACHING PROCESS FOR RECOVERING URANIUM VALUES Abstract of the Disclosure An in situ leaching process for recovering uranium values from a subterranean deposit which combines subsurface leach steps and surface processing steps to produce a high grade uranium product. An alkaline carbonate and/or bicarbonate lixiviant, preferably ammonium bicarbonate, is flowed through the deposit to dissolve the uranium values The pregnant lixiviant is produced to the surface where it is passed through a concentration unit, e.g., ion exchange material, to remove the uranium values from the pregnant lixiviant. An eluant comprising a strong solution of ammonium carbonate is then passed through the concentration unit to desorb the uranium values into the eluant in a much greater concentration than that which existed in the pregnant lixiviant. The pregnant eluate is then heated to drive off ammonia and carbon dioxide, and the uranium values, i.e., yellowcake, are allowed to precipitate. Both the ammonia and carbon dioxide are recovered for reuse in the process. -1-
