ABSTRACT A process for the in situ reduction of the hydrogen sulfide concentration of n gas derived from A subsurface formation of hydrocarbon material. The process comprises providing an aqueous electrolyte in contact with the formation and providing at least two electrically conductive elements, constituting an anode and a cathode, in contact with such electrolyte. A controlled amount of electrical current is passed from a direct current source through the formation between the electrically conductive elements at a voltage of at least 0.3 volts and the current is controlled relative to the composition of the material and the ambient conditions adjacent to the elements are controlled to heat the surface of each element during application of the voltage thereacross to a temperature which is less that 500°F, thereby to yield a gas which has a hydrogen sulfide content substantially less than the gas naturally occurring in the formation. A notable advantage of the present invention over prior art process involving electrical treatment of subsurface formations is that it produces high Btu fuel gas having significantly reduced hydrogen sulfide levels under relatively moderate operating conditions. Moreover, the process of the present invention produces satisfactory results in areas where existing recovery technology has been ineffective.
