60-OS-76 1. BE IT KNOWN THAT RICHARD D. RIDLEY of 2224 First Street, Grand Junction, Colorado 81501 United States of America and GORDON B. FRENCH of 7684 North Quartz Street, Golden, Colorado 80401, United State of America having made an invention entitled: "In situ recovery of shale oil" the following disclosure contains a correct and full des- cription of the invention and of the best mode known to the inventors of taking advantage of the same. ABSTRACT An in situ ore, e.g. oil shale, retort containing a frag- mented permeable mass of particles is formed in a subterr- anean formation containing, e.g., oil shale by excavation an open base of operation in the formation at an elevation above the fragmented mass to be formed, excavating an access drift to provide access to the bottom of the retort site and explos- ively expanding formation to form the fragmented mass bet- ween the access drift and an elevation spaced below the bott- om of the base of operation, leaving a horizontal sill pillar of unfragmented formation between the top of the fragmented mass and the bottom of the base of operation. The sill pill- ar provides a safe base of operation above the fragmented mass after it is formed. Products, e.g. shale oil, are rec- overed from the retort by introducing gas into the fragmen- ted mass from the base of operation via holes extending throu- gh the horizontal pillar, e.g. blasting holes utilized during explosive expansion of formation, for establishing a combust- ion zone in the fragmented mass and for advancing the com- bustion zone through the fragmented mass. The holes have sep- arte valves located in the base of operation for use in con- trolling gas flow thorough selected regions of the fragmented mass.
