ABSTRACT A method is described for the preparation of uniform colloidal metal ferrite particles, for example MnFe2O4, at a relatively low temperature and in an aminodextran containing solution. The aminodextran in solution acts as a vehicle for the nucleation and growth of colloidal particles of metal oxides while simultaneously preventing the aggregation of the newly formed particles by coating them to maintain their dispersion as separate single par- ticles. Monodispersed metal ferrite particles have mag- netic properties that are useful for manufacturing transformers, inductors, and audio and video recording heads. The aminodextran coated particles of the inven- tion also have utility as a substrate for carrying vari- ous biological molecules, for example antibodies, and for conducting immunoassays.
