- 33 - Abstract of the Disclosure An in vitro method and probe for determining the presence of the ring shaped particle (RSP) tumor marker and for detecting the presence of malignancy in humans and animals comprises capturing the marker out of a biological fluid containing cancerous cells onto a substrate and detecting the presence of the RSP tumor marker on the substrate as an indicator of the presence of the malignancy. One preferred method involves using an anti-RSP antibody (rspAb) selected from one or more of the monoclonal, polyclonal and affinity purified antibodies to capture the tumor marker from a sample of a biological fluid such as blood serum, sputum, urine, irrigation fluids, etc.. The tumor marker is captured onto a substrate with an rspAb and its presence on the substrate is detected using common detection systems, such as color development techniques. In one preferred form, the tumor marker is detected on the substrate by reaction with a tRNA-photobiotin-streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase probe. Another preferred method involves using a transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA) probe which is specific to the aminoacyl transfer RNA synthetase reactive site on the marker and detecting the presence of the RSP by color development techniques using a tRNA-photobiotin-streptavidin-alkaline phosphatase probe.
