Disclosed is a method for activating an NKT cell which comprises the step of culturing a mononuclear cell fraction comprising an NKT cell in vitro in the presence of a compound of formula (I) or a salt or a solvate thereof: (see formula I) wherein R1 is H or OH; X is 7-27; R is (a) -CH2(CH2)y CH3, (b) -CH(OH)(CH)y CH3, (c) -CH(OH)(CH2)y CH(CH3)2, (d) -CH=CH(CH2)y CH3 or (e) -CH(OH)(CH2)y CH(CH3)CH2CH3 where Y is 5-17; and R3 to R9 are H, OH, NH2, NHCOCH3 or a sugar residue.
