Abstract of the Disclosure Altered transcriptional activators can bind to genes or other components of the transcriptional machinery of the cell without activating transcription of the genes. Synthetic DNA sequences which code for these modified regulatory compounds can be introduced into plant cells to competitively inhibit expression of one or more target genes.
