ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A body of sintered polycrystalline varistor material connected across the filament of an incandescent lamp shunts a transient voltage surge thereby protecting the lamp filament. The body of varistor material is alternatively included in the lamp base member or comprises a pill of varistor material having contact members for insertion in a lamp socket.
