A free water knock-out vessel is disclosed and which is tilted off its horizontal axis thereby increasing the gravitational effect in the separation process of an oil-water emulsion within the vessel. This results also in wider liquid bands being developed therein so that clean water and pure oil may be drawn off the vessel sooner than would be the case with a horizontal vessel. A gently inclined, perforated and partially blocked inlet nozzle allows liquid to be introduced into the vessel with less separation being required. Baffles are strategically located to enhance separation.
