The invention pertains to a recombinant bacterium with enhanced ethanol production characteristics when cultivated in a growth medium comprising glycerol. The recombinant bacterium comprises an inserted heterologous gene encoding glycerol dehydrogenase, and/or an up-regulated native gene encoding glycerol dehydrogenase. Particularly there is provided the recombinant bacterium BG1G1 of the Thermoanaerobacter mathranii species with an inserted heterologous gene encoding the E.C. 1.1.1.6 type, a NAD dependent glycerol dehydrogenase obtained from Thermotoga maritima.

Cette invention concerne une bactérie recombinée dotée de caractéristiques de production d'éthanol améliorées lorsqu'elle est cultivée dans un milieu de croissance contenant du glycérol. La bactérie recombinée comprend un gène hétérologue inséré et codant la glycérol déshydrogénase, et/ou un gène natif à régulation positive codant la glycérol déshydrogénase. L'invention concerne en particulier la bactérie recombinée BG1G1 de l'espèce Thermoanaerobacter mathranii ayant un gène hétérologue inséré et codant le type E.C. 1.1.1.6, une glycérol déshydrogénase dépendante du NAD obtenue à partir de Thermotoga maritima.
