A novel indicator and method for automatically sorting fir lumber from other wood species is provided. The indicator consists of a solvent such as ethyl alcohol, a denaturant such as glacial acetic acid, a filler such as water and a pH indicator such as bromophenol blue. The composition turns blue on fir lumber when applied on selected wood surfaces; otherwise it will turn yellow or green. Based on this differentiation, the sorting of the fir lumber can be done automatically using an optical scanning system.
