ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Indole derivatives of the formula Image wherein R1, R2 and R3 are identical or different and each is H or alkyl of 1 - 6 carbon atoms, R4 is H or methyl and R5 is methyl , phenyl or chloro- phenyl, and their physiologically acceptable salts, are blood cholesterol- lowering agents. They may be prepared by reacting a particularly defined 5 - hydroxyindole with a specific carboxylic acid compound or reacting a particularly defined functionally modified 5-hydroxyindole with a solvolyz- ing agent.
