The present invention relates to a novel process which, based on genetic engineering techniques, makes it possible to produce an inducible virus resistance in plants. The present invention further relates to the use of this process for the production of virus-resistant plants and to the plants themselves that have been obtained by this process and provided with an inducible virus resistance, and to the progeny thereof. The present invention also includes chimeric genetic constructs, cloning vehicles and host organisms and methods or transferring an inducible virus resistance to plants. A further aspect of the present invention concerns the use of said recombinant DNA molecules for the "immunisation" of plants against undesired virus attack.
