ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing a sulfoxide of the formula Image in which R1 and R2 each independently is an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group optionally substituted by halogen, alkoxy, a phosphoric ester residue, or an optionally substituted phenyl group; an aryl group optionally substituted by halogen or a nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryloxy, alkylcarbonyl or alkoxycarbonyl group; or a group of the formula Image R3 and R4 each independently is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or phenyl group, or R3 and R4 together form a ring containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms and optionally containing another hetero atom; and n is 0 or 1, and when n is 0, R1 and R2 may be bonded to each other to form a ring with 4 to 6 carbon atoms, which comprises reacting a thioether or thiolcarboxylic acid derivative of the formula Image with hydrogen peroxide in an aprotic solvent in the presence of an organic carboxylic acid and sulfuric acid. The compounds obtained according to the claimed process can be used as agricultural chemicals or as intermediates for pesticides or pharmaceuticals, as lubricant additives or as thickeners for cosmetics.
