INDWELLING PLACEMENT DEVICE WITH GUARD Abstract of the Disclosure An indwelling placement device (10) having an introducing needle (44) and a catheter (48) for infusing fluids into a blood vessel incorporates a guard (20) for shielding the needle (44) prior to extension from therewithin and for receiving the needle (443 upon retraction thereinto to preclude an operator inadvertently contacting the needle (44) after use. Once retracted, the needle (44) cannot be extended from within the guard (20). Upon retraction of the needle into the guard, a button (56) mates with the open end of a hollow hub of the needle (54) of the needle (44) to prevent outflow of residual blood therefrom. A valve (62) is incorporated with the catheter (48) to preclude blood outflow from the catheter (48) upon withdrawal of the needle (44) and prior to attachment of an intravenous line for conveying a fluid to be intravenously administered.
