An inert anode for the electrolytic production of metals such as aluminum is disclosed. The inert anode includes a ceramic oxide material preferably made from NiO, Fe2O3, and CoO. The inert anode composition may be of the formula Ni x Fe2 y Co2O(3y+x+z)+-.delta., where x is from 0.15 to 0.99, y is from 0.0001 to 0.35, z is from 0.0001 to 0.45, and .delta. is from 0 to 0.3. The inert anode may optionally include other oxides and/or at least one metal phase, such as Cu, Ag, Pd, Pt, Au, Rh, Ru, Ir and/or Os. The Ni-Fe-Co-O ceramic material exhibits very low solubility in Hall cell baths used to produce aluminum.

Cette invention a trait à une anode permanente pour la production électrolytique de métaux tels que l'aluminium. Cette anode permanente renferme un oxyde céramique, fait, de préférence, de NiO, de Fe>2<O>3< et de CoO. La composition de cette anode permanente peut correspondre à la formule suivante : Ni>x<Fe>2y<Co>z<O>(3y+x+z)+/- delta <, formule dans laquelle la valeur de x est comprise entre 0.15 et 0.99, celle de y entre 0.0001 et 0.35, celle de z entre 0.0001 et 0.45 et celle de delta entre 0 et 0,3. Cette anode permanente peut éventuellement renfermer d'autres oxydes et/ou au moins une phase métallique, notamment Cu, Ag, Pd, Pt, Au, Rh, Ru, Ir et/ou Os. Le matériau céramique Ni-Fe-Co-O fait montre d'une très faible solubilité dans des bains à cellule de Hall utilisés pour la production d'aluminium.
