Mutants of the infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1)), containing a deletion and/or insertion mutation in the gene coding for minor glycoprotein gI, whereby no expression of the glycoprotein by the virus occurs: inactivated, attenuated or subunit vaccines for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) containing such strains: the use of said mutants as expression vectors; IBR vaccines and other bovine disease vaccines containing said mutants as expression vectors: methods for producing deleted viruses and expression vector viruses; and methods for using vaccines prepared from deleted mutants, or derivatives thereof, are disclosed. Animals vaccinated with said mutants or expression vectors derived therefrom do not develop antibodies to the viral glycoprotein having the deleted gene, and may be serologically distinguished from animals infected with diathetic BHV-1 strains.
