ABSTRACT A waste disposal method and system are disclosed for decontaminating and disposing contaminated and infectious wastes from hospitals, laboratories and the like. The system comprises a decontamination chamber heated to a temperature sufficient to decontaminate waste during a predetermined retention time while waste is passed through said chamber. The decontamination chamber preferably is cylindrical and has an outer chamber surrounding said decontamination chamber forming an annulus through which a heating fluid such as hot oil flows co-current or counter-current to the flow of waste therein. A helical screw conveyor may advance waste through said chamber. Decontaminated waste may be briquetted and bagged as a porous, sterile granulate.
