An inflatable building block is formed of an air impermeable flexible envelope forming a rectangular polyhedron, a valve for regulating flow of air into and out of the air impermeable flexible envelope, and connectors on at least two opposed sides of the rectangular polyhedron for connecting the inflatable building block to another inflatable building block. Opposed sides of the rectangular polyhedron are internally connected to each other by connecting members that limit movement of the rectangular sides away from each other. The connecting members are preferably flexible membranes that connect to the rectangular sides along lines that bisect the rectangular sides, and which, upon inflation of the inflatable building block, the connecting lines between the membranes and the rectangular sides lie in the faces of the rectangular polyhedron formed by the inflatable building block. The connectors may be of the hook and loop type. The inflatable building blocks are preferably used in sets, some of the building blocks being cubes, and some rectangular polyhedrons with two opposed sides matching the sides of the cubes.
