An inflatable support (e.g. a mattress or seat cushion) comprises a plurality of elongate inflatable cells (12) containing a solid deformable material such as resilient foam, beads or fibres. Typically, the cells are inflated and deflated periodically by means of a pump (P). The solid within the cells reduces the volume of air within the cells, and thus a pressure pump of a lower rating for supplying pressurised air can be used. Moreover, if the supply of pressurised air should fail for any reason a patient on the mattress will still be supported by the deformable material within the cell.

La présente invention a pour objet un support gonflable ( matelas ou coussin, par ex.) comportant une pluralité de cellules gonflables (12) de forme allongée contenant un matériau solide déformable tel une mousse, des billes ou des fibres résilientes. Généralement, les cellules sont gonflées et dégonflées périodiquement à l'aide d'une pompe (P). Les solides contenus dans les cellules réduisent le volume d'air à l'intérieur de ces dernières, ce qui permet l'utilisation d'une pompe de plus faible débit pour l'alimentation en air sous pression. En outre, en cas de non-disponibilité d'un approvisionnement d'air sous pression, le patient étendu sur le matelas pourra toujours bénéficier du support offert par le matériau déformable contenu à l'intérieur des cellules.
