Extremely coarse quantization beyond the degree established by the masking threshold with little loss of quality or none at all is made possible by quantizing not the prefiltered prediction or forecast directly, but by quantizing instead a prediction error obtained by a forward-adaptive prediction or forecast of the prefiltered signal. Due to the forward adaptivity, the quantization error has no negative impact on the decoder prediction.

Une quantification extrêmement grossière dépassant la valeur définie par le seuil de masquage, sans perte de qualité ou avec seulement de faibles pertes de qualité, est possible en quantifiant non pas directement le signal préfiltré, mais une erreur de prédiction, résultant d'une prédiction adaptative directe du signal préfiltré. Compte tenu de l'adaptativité directe, l'erreur de quantification n'influe pas négativement sur la prédiction du côté du décodeur.
