A system for detecting the presence of an object, its shape, length, size, and if a heating material, such as a hot melt adhesive, has been applied to the object at designated locations, or in the proper amount. The system uses an infrared detection system which is not influenced by external disturbances. A radiant energy detection sensor is placed opposite a radiant energy source, and the object is moved between the radiant energy source and radiant energy detection sensor.
